August at Added Value!
August has arrived in New York, and out on the Red Hook Community Farm we are enjoying the breeze and eating tomatoes and basil fresh off the farm. Teens are seeding sorrel and chard; neighbors are watching films on the farm at night.
Join us every Saturday for our Farmers’ Market, and to volunteer!
The market runs from 9am- 3pm and is stocked with delicious nectarines, plums, tomatoes, eggplants, collard greens, zucchini, cucumbers….. not to mention incredible brownies and carrot cake made by the young women of the Lower East Side Girls’ Club.
This Saturday, come lend a hand as we seed, weed, build beds, and care for the crops.
Other news and upcoming events….
* COMPOST! Added Value is developing an exciting new compost system to help us harvest food waste and create fertile soil on our urban farm. We’ve begun collecting lots of great compost from the kitchens of local restaurants Rice and Havana Outpost (both in Fort Greene). If you’re interested in turning trash to treasure…. We need your help!
We invite you to join us for a compost workday on Saturday August 26th, to help build and implement the new system and design. Additionally, we are seeking a crew of dedicated, compost-savvy volunteers to maintain the system, along with Added Value youth leaders, throughout the year. If you are interested in obtaining a regular compost shift at the farm or would like more information about the project, please contact Shanti Nagel (Farm and Market Manager) at [email protected] or 718-288-6752.
* MOVIES ON THE FARM! Thanks to everyone who came out to see Dave Chappelle’s block party on the Farm! We had an incredible crowd of 170 neighbors, friends, families on blankets and hay bales. Join us next weekend, and in early September, to enjoy more local ice cream and great movies!
