April Showers bring May vegetables

Another season has begun on the Red Hook Community Farm, and we are growing as fast as the weeds! Come join us, and get your hands dirty this spring. Find information below about volunteer days, school visit opportunities, and our growing community!

A Growing Farm
This year, we’re expanding by building new beds on the East side of the farm, which will become the home of our very own urban Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program! More information will be posted on the website May 1st.

Familiar Faces: Youth Leadership Institute
In February seven youth participants returned for a second season on the farm, to take part in our Youth Leadership Institute. Over the past few months, Jasmin, Jillian, Larry, Kimberly, Christopher, Dwayne, and Maxine have been digging deeper and growing into strong youth leaders. After making a great series of posters answering the question “Why Local?” they’ve jumped into farm work: planning, preparing for, and seeding new crops. They’re also building their group leadership skills, as they get ready to host visitors, volunteers, and a new crew of Summer Youth Participants!

Friends in New Places: Michael Hurwitz joins GreenMarkets
Michael Hurwitz, Added Value’s Co-founder and board member, recently became the Director of GreenMarkets. As a long time advocate for local food, champion of urban and rural farmers, and supporter of community development, Michael brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to a fantastic organization with a great tradition. We congratulate you!

New Faces: Added Value staff’s up for a great season
This spring, Added Value’s community is multiplying like cherry tomatoes in the summer sun. We are welcoming a host of new faces to the farm—bringing with them skill, enthusiasm, and energy.

Aaron Reser and Jennifer Guillaume join us as Farm Assistants this month—Jennifer hailing from Washington, D.C., and Aaron returning to the farm in a new context—some of you may recall she was an intern with our Seed-to-Salad elementary school program last Spring!

Jessica Smith joined us last week, as a Farm Educator working with our spring Seed-to-Salad program, delivering our 9-week curriculum for PS 27 and the Brooklyn New School. Learning and supporting by her side are Farm Education Interns: Eli, Christina, and Katie.

As the season rolls along, look for more new faces: Farm Interns, Summer Program Interns, and regular volunteers!

Volunteer- Get Your Hands Dirty!
Crocuses and daffodils are blooming, and it’s the right time of year to roll up your sleeves. Join us for the following community farm days:

Saturday, April 21st – Hands-On New York Day! Join 70 volunteers from around the city as we nearly double our growing space by building new beds on the East side of the farm. We’ll also be weeding, planting, painting, and expanding our compost system by constructing new bins and piles!
Saturday, May 5th – “First Saturday” workday on the Farm!
Saturday, May 19th – It’s My Park Day!
Saturday, June 2nd – “First Saturday” workday and Red Hook Waterfront Arts Festival at Valentino Pier (make a day of it!)

School Visits: Fridays on the Farm!
Every year, we get more and more requests for educational visits to the Red Hook Community Farm. This spring, we are offering one-time farm visits for elementary school classes, on Friday afternoons!

The Farm is an ideal place to learn about life cycles, sequencing, community interdependence, living creatures, and where our food comes from, as well as a place to build essential skills: cooperation, writing, observation, and inquiry-based learning are all part of a day on the farm. Children leave feeling proud of their work, and excited about the new things they have tried: tasting a radish for the first time, digging in soil, pulling a weed out of the ground.

Each lesson lasts 2 ½ hours, and consists of a farm tour, and hands-on activity stations around one of the following themes:
Compost: Plant Cycles and Critters on the Farm
Seeds: Seed Planting & What Seeds Need to Grow
Harvesting: 6 Plant Part Burrito or Salad-Making

Available Fridays are: Friday May 4th through Friday June 22nd. Visits can begin as early as 11:00 AM. Fee is $5 per student. Individual classes are welcome. No minimum number of students. 40 student maximum. Registration is on a first-come, first-serve basis. To register, or for more information, contact Caroline at 718-855-5531 or cloomis(at)added-value.org .
