URBAN FARM ASSISTANT – Red Hook Community Farm

This position is for young people ages 20 to 24 who qualify as low income. Urban Farm Assistants will be paid 7.25/hr, 18hrs per week beginning late June through late August. Work days are typically 8am to 4pm including Saturdays.

Job Description:
This summer, Added Value is collaborating with the Department of Human Resources Administration and the Center for Economic Opportunity Work Progress Program as part of New York City’s efforts to address unemployment and provide summer jobs. We are seeking several Urban Farm Assistants for an 8-week summer position. Farm assistants will work with staff and youth leaders to grow food for sale and donation. They will also be called upon to support educational activities, community events and volunteer activities in Red Hook. Added Value will provide on-the job training in urban food production, composting, food handling, irrigation, volunteer management, and record keeping.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Greenhouse work, planting, weeding, harvesting, tool maintenance, and other tasks related to farm production
  • Working with volunteers and youth and participation in farm staff meetings
  • Serve as role models and stewards of our space and community
  • Arriving to work on-time wearing appropriate attire for working in ALL weather conditions

Minimum Requirements: We are seeking individuals who are self-motivated, hard-working, and enthusiastic people who enjoy working outdoors. Other important traits include good communication skills, curiosity, commitment to positive social change, ability to work with people of all ages, willingness to work long hours doing physical work. We value individuals who possess an interest and enthusiasm for community improvement and we can provide farm training to those with a limited background in farm labor.

MARKET & CSA COORDINATOR – Red Hook Community Farm

As part of Added Value’s mission, we have developed a three tiered system to market local and regional produce and products, including our Farmer’s Markets, CSA, and restaurant partnerships. For the nine years Added Value has operated the Farmers Market and run a CSA distribution every Saturday from June to November at the Red Hook Community Farm. It is a special event where shoppers and share holders can pick up vegetables grown on our farms as well as other produce including fruit, meat, dairy and other vegetables from local farms while actually walking amongst the fields or volunteering to get their hands dirty.

Job Description:
The role of the Market & CSA Coordinator will be to enliven and enrich the market going experience by managing the operation and coordination of our Red Hook Farmers Market and CSA program. Additionally, the Market Coordinator will be helping to supervise and train our youth leadership team at the Red Hook market and CSA distribution. We are seeking a motivated, responsible individual with previous experience with market managing and working with youth. Other important traits include strong communication skills and a positive attitude. A strong applicant will be curious, have a commitment to social justice, and youth empowerment and have experience working with people in Red Hook or similar communities. This is a part-time position from June to November averaging 20 hours per week. Saturdays are required. This position will be paid $13.50/hr.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Set up and operate the Red Hook Market and CSA with the Youth Empowerment Program
  • Supervise youth participants running the market and CSA
  • Coordinate programming with CSA Core group and CSA members
  • Attend CSA Core group meetings
  • Maintain records for both the Red Hook Farmers Market, CSA, and restaurant sales
  • Maintain equipment and materials for Red Hook Farmers Market and CSA distribution
  • Manage ordering for wholesale accounts
  • Occasional Pick up of wholesale produce and products and delivery to restaurants
  • Participate in youth program evaluations
  • Maintain Outreach Materials
  • Supporting public events at market

Minimum Qualifications

  • Understanding of food systems and urban population food needs
  • Experience with customer service, food sales, food handling, and product development a plus
  • Experience working with youth
  • A commitment to working with diverse group of community residents, youth, and children
  • Knowledge of MS Office including Excel, Word
  • Bi-lingual (Spanish) preferred
  • Self motivated and ability to work within a fluid environment
  • Current Driver’s License and ability to drive a Cargo Van
