April at Added Value
Spring is here on the Red Hook Community Farm!
We’re turning beds, planting seeds in the greenhouse, and even munching on the first new greens: arugula, spinach, chervil, lemon sorrel, upland cress... We've got events and volunteer days coming up, as well as two new staff members and a great new bunch of youth participants. We hope to see you on the Farm soon!
* Get your hands dirty! *
Volunteer at one of our upcoming Community Farm Days. We'll be planting seeds, preparing beds, pulling out winter weeds, and getting the Farm ready for the season: Earth Day- April 19th, 10am-3pm First Saturday in May- May 3rd, 10am-3pm
* Grand Opening of our new office! *
Thanks to all of you who have helped us move in, assemble furniture, and get settled into our new space. We’re having a celebration and Grand Opening on Wednesday, May 7th from 4pm to 7pm. Come check out the new space, eat some snacks, and view the incredibly awesome Exploring Food Systems photo show!
* Youth Photo Show: Exploring Food Systems * On display at the Added Value office from May 7-June 7
This 20-print gallery show of photographs by teens is a provocative and eye-opening document of food systems in our Brooklyn neighborhoods. Exploring Food Systems is a joint project of Dreaming With Cameras, and Digital Horizons, a program of Added Value. In addition to their work at Red Hook Community Farm during the fall of 2007, 4 youth program participants explored different aspects of the food system and shot over 2000 photos, and chose the 20 photos for the gallery show. If you missed the show at the Red Hook Initiative, and at Making Brooklyn Bloom, this is another chance to see the show. There will be hardcover and soft cover books available featuring the 20 photos from the show, and Kimberly's Making Brooklyn Bloom speech that featured some of the photos, for sale at the office, starting May 7.
* New Staff! New Youth Participants! *
This season, we’ve been joined by two great Farm Assistants, as well as a fabulous bunch of new youth participants.
Originally from New York City, Bruni Torras comes to Added Value from two years farming on Long Island. Prior to that, she has been a classroom educator, NYC community gardener, and conflict resolution consultant. Kristen Schafenacker brings rural farming experience to Added Value, from Red Fire Farm and Heifer International’s Overlook Farm in Massachusetts. She is also a chef and culinary educator, so we’re looking forward to some delicious eats this season!
The 2008 crew of Youth Participants started one week ago. So far they've planted seeds, prepared beds, and begun building a great community. We're proud to welcome Angela, Aseel, Cynithia, Jennifer, Malcom, Miriahm, Narcisso, Nickeisha, Paul, Tariq, Tattianna, and Vanessa!
